Why 3-word passwords?

Because humans remember words, not 47-character URLs.

The old way

Sharing links is broken — here's why

  • Links break when wrapped across lines in emails
  • Links expire and return errors weeks later
  • Links can't be shared verbally over the phone
  • Links look suspicious — people don't click unknown URLs

With Skypost

Skypost uses 3-word passwords because they solve every problem links have. Words are memorable (“tiger-balloon-sunset” sticks in your head). Words are speakable (you can share them by phone). Words don’t break in emails. Words feel safe — nobody worries about typing 3 words into a trusted website. It’s the most natural way to share access to something.

Frequently asked questions

Where did the idea for 3-word passwords come from?+

The concept is inspired by research showing that short phrases of common words are both memorable and secure. Similar approaches are used by what3words for locations and by cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases.

Are 3-word passwords more secure than links?+

They're comparably secure. A randomly generated 3-word combination from a large dictionary produces millions of possibilities. Combined with a 24-hour expiry, they're extremely difficult to guess.

Why not just use a PIN or numeric code?+

Words are far more memorable than numbers. Quick — which is easier to remember: “tiger-balloon-sunset” or “839472”? Research consistently shows humans recall words better than digits.

Can I choose my own 3 words?+

Currently, Skypost generates the 3 words automatically to ensure uniqueness and randomness. This guarantees every password is unique and unguessable.

What happens after 24 hours?+

The 3-word password expires and the files are deleted. This keeps the system clean and means old passwords can't be used to access old files.
